Perfectionists take care of details. Without them, the world would settle for "good enough" and excellence wouldn't exist. But like all great personality traits, detail-orientation can be taken to an extreme, leading to a case of perfectionism that turns into burnout. By definition, meeting planning involves harmoniously arranging a thousand different details. That part simply can't be avoided, but it can be managed.
Here are tips from our pro team on how to manage the minutiae while keeping your mental and physical wellbeing in clear focus:
- Simplify. You're probably already a list-making guru, but have you mastered the art of deletion? Take a hard look at your overview list and whittle it down.
- Shift perspective. Perfectionists tend to take deletions as failures. We promise, they're not. In fact, over-stuffing an itinerary can put more pressure on meeting attendees as well as the planner. More free time and fewer choices of speakers, activities and even menus can be more relaxing for them as well as for you.
- Practice productive procrastination. It exists! Set a timeline and stick to it, avoiding the temptation to do some tasks earlier than they should be done. Tasks checked off too early often end up requiring a re-do which wastes your valuable time.
- Get rid of unproductive procrastination. Taking care of things as you think of them may sound great, but not when "real quick" overwhelms your entire day.
- Celebrate every checked box. As a perfectionist, you're more likely to beat yourself up over a perceived shortfall and ignore small wins. Make a big deal of every accomplished task, big or small. The morale boost may just help you realize how incredible you are!
